Venice is a maze of little narrow streets, bridges over canals, ancient macaroon coloured buildings, churches, squares and linen hanging from windows. To see it as you should is by gondola. We secured our gondola ride on the 'Tempesta' in the San Polo district a quieter area for 80 Euros/40mins which was well worth it. Our gondolier took us down narrow canals, under bridges, negotiated turns and passing other boats. He said to be a gondolier you have to live in Venice and your family usually passes on a licence to you. He said that his grandfather bought his boat for him and called it Tempesta because he was a naughty child!
