Ancient Pompeii was a busy coastal town when in 79 AD a volcanic eruption of Mt Vesuvius created a pumice ash blanket that entombed the town and its inhabitants. What was buried provided a snap shot of the life of the towns inhabitants. The site is a meandering ruin, the free map that you get when you purchase your ticket is a guide to the various places of interest. Take snacks and drinks for kids getting tired of looking at ruins.
