David Walsh is Tasmania's famous millionaire gambler who founded the MONA (The Museum of Old and New Art) in 2001. It however was his extensive $75 million renovations that were completed in 2011 of the MONA that have now put it on the map as a must see destination in Australia - its nice to give back!
Personally its the building that inspires more than the art, the experience of the space is a journey in its self. The 3 levels of the building are connected by a spiral staircase and a glass lift that cuts through the underground sandstone of the Berriedale peninsula. Its easy to get a bit lost in the gallery it is not the conventional white walled standard space, rather there are large open spaces, narrow tunnels, dark lighting, different textures and layers to it.
We drove there but most people catch the MONA grey army camouflage ferry from Hobart which I think would have to be the best way to get there adding to the MONA experience. Katisilidis's architecture is iconic, I also like the vineyard setting and the wine bar and the out door performance space with its pink bean bags.
