Athens Acropolis and The Plaka streets

Athens was hot the day we walked up to the Acropolis to take in the ruins and views over the expanse of the ancient city. On top of the hill is the majestic Parthenon built in 447 BC and dedicated to the Goddess Athena, who traditionally holds an owl as a symbol of wisdom.  The city of Athens took her name as there were many owls about then apparently.  The 2000 yr old monuments give a tactile experience of time and the evolution of Western Civilisation it was a great way for the kids to learn about our history.

The Plaka at the base of the Acropolis is a fantastic tourist destination.  The area is a mess of little streets all displaying, lots of trinket shops, evil eye tokens, replicas of the Parthenon, cafes, fashion and handbag stalls open day and night.  Our hotel the Acropolis Boutique had a lovely old facade and was walking distance to the colourful Plaka area.
