Blood oranges and the Ca 'd Oro

We walked from our palazzo through the Cannaregio district  past market stalls and classic Venetian tourist trinket stands to the Ca' d' Oro 1428 (a Palace for the Contorini family, its last owner Franchetti in 1916 bequeathed it and his art collection to the people of Italy).  Lots of marble and gilt religious art.

The local blood orange juices are really sweet and delicious so we would frequently stop at cafes selling it, the expense justified by the health benefits while travelling - yummy.

Definitely the cheapest way to experience a gondola ride is to take a traghetti to cross the Grand Canal.   At various points for 2 Euros you can experience the hair raising rocks of the boat as it crosses the busy and precarious thorough fare.
