Amsterdam New Years was explosive

Celebrated New Year Eve 2020 in Amsterdam, the Dutch are crazy pyrotech's every one was letting off boxes of fireworks - terrifyingly loud and potentially dangerous.   Loved walking around the cobble stoned streets lining the canals, the art galleries and visiting Zaanse Schans the wind mill town.  Anne Frank's audio tour and new museum was a highlight.  Even in Winter getting tickets to these things has to be organised way in advance.

Amsterdam Hilton - John Lennon and Yoko stayed here
for their peace protest.

The Amsterdam Hilton's amazing Christmas tree

Christmas tree's on street corners

Remnants of New Years Eve fireworks which terrified Hollander
 - bombs going off every street corner all day and night and random people walking
in crowds throwing down crackers - so different to our highly regulated firework events.

Cool Netherlands squishy cars

Lots of canals in Amsterdam!  100 km dug in the 17th C formed concentric
belts around the city.  We did a canal cruise which is a great way to see the city.

The Tulip 'mania' museum, outlines the history of the trade and the fall of the tulip era.

Tulip's were first desired by the sultans of the Ottoman Empire.

Went to the Anne Frank House museum which was very moving.

Clog making

At the height of it productiveness in the 17th and 18th C Zaanstreek
an industrial area north of Amsterdam had more than 1100 windmills operating
- manufacturing oil, paper, processing grain and saw milling.

Traditional windmills would grind paint pigments, press oils, make mustard.

Even though it was touristy it was beautiful to get out into the country side
and see the restored windmills.
