Takayama and our first Onsen experience

Loved Takayama a very cold traditional preserved town.  Famous for its Festival floats, old wooden buildings, sake houses and tea rooms.  We stayed at Spa Hotel Alpina a modern Japanese hotel with a lovely onsen on the roof top, it appeared to be the place that Japanese went for a nice weekend away, and if it wasn't for the 'idiots guide' to onsen I probably wouldn't have tried it so its thanks to Spa Hotel Alpina that I managed to get my 'kit' off at a few other onsen on our trip.   While we stayed here we took a train to a nearby village called Hida-Furukawa to do a bicycle tour.

A lovely tea house

17th Century Spring and Autumn floats (Yatai) are still in use, paraded around town during the spectacle.

A few of the festival floats are on display in the local museum.  The Takayama Matsuri (festival) is regarded as one of the most beautiful in Japan.

Idiots guide to using Onsen.  I wouldn't have done it without having this to study before hand.

 Hida-Furukawa farm lands

Live stock are kept indoors to fatten up.The famous Hida Kobe cattle listen to music, get beer and massages thats why its very expensive!

The auspicious Koi in the Hida-Furukawa drains were introduced to help the locals keep their water clean.  During winter they are relocated to a large pond on the out skirts of town.

Hida-Furukawa festival floats are stored in each precinct this one was being inspected for the upcoming Spring Festival.

7th generation Buddist candle maker in the back streets of Hida-Furukawa he was so happy in his little work shop.  He makes the large Winter Festival candle that is lit for the town.
